The Oddities of the English Language

The Oddities of the English Language

I was watching a video of Michael McIntyre, a British comedian, who hilariously made fun of the English language. He expounded on different pronunciations of the same name like Stuart and Stewart, as well as, how silent letters confound us all.  He gave suggestions of how to simplify the English language for Americans, which was quite funny.  At best, the English language is contradictory. It was confusing when we had to learn vowel combinations and the rules of I before e because there was always an exception to the rule!

For today’s post I thought it might be fun to look at the absurdity of our English language.

Pronunciation-

Rain vs Reign      Bomb vs Tomb vs Comb       Tough vs Dough           Home vs Some

Lead vs Led          Read vs Read                       Fear vs Bear                Tear vs Tear

Sew vs Few

Oxymorons- so confusing when learning this language

Icy Hot             Pretty Ugly      Deafening Silence       Clearly Confused

Living Dead     Original Copy

Things to Ponder

Why is it you are in a car, but on a bus?

Why is it we park in a driveway, but drive on a parkway?

Why is it we ship by truck, but don’t truck by a ship?

I leave you with this thought today,

“If there is one thing certain about the English Language pronunciation, it is that there is almost nothing certain about it. No other language in the world has more words spelled the same way yet pronounced differently.” ~Bill Bryson

Cheers to the storyteller in all of us!
